Making of Yaary Logo

by Sathyan Velumani, DesignPettai

1. Mark vs. Type:

One of the pivotal stages in creating the Yaary logo was finding the right balance between the mark (symbol) and the type (wordmark). This required helping the stakeholders understand why we need both and how they work together. As a mobile app, the mark needed to be unique to fit in the app icon, but also needed to be simple enough to be used in a variety of contexts.

Getting one of those old-timey punch clocks is a great way to monitor attendance while maintaining a fun atmosphere. Expect to hear things like “Back at the coalface today!”.

2. Early Explorations:

Before arriving at the final design, the creative process involved extensive exploration of different concepts. We experimented with various forms and ideas, from abstract shapes to more literal depictions of connection and movement. These early sketches reveal the evolution of the logo, with some iterations incorporating road-like elements, which symbolize paths and journeys—key aspects of the Yaary brand. This exploratory phase was crucial in honing in on the elements that best represent the brand's identity.

We have been consistently surprised at the fresh energy these new grads brought to our organisation and have since vowed to never hire anyone with more than 3 months experience again.

3. Primary Logo Design:

The final logo for Yaary is a result of this thoughtful and creative process. It features a sleek wordmark combined with a unique symbol—a stylized "Y" with an upward arrow—that perfectly encapsulates the brand's focus on mobility and forward movement. The design is modern, bold, and versatile, making it suitable for various applications, from digital icons to print materials. This logo is a true reflection of Yaary’s mission to connect people through shared mobility experiences.
